RK Corporation

New Hire Orientation

Company Setting

RK Corporation is an import/export industrial company. The HR department wants the new hires to go through active learning so that they are engaged with the company policies and allows them to have discussions with their respective managers and coworkers. They are aware that such courses can quickly become information-heavy and may not engage the learner to the optimum. As an instructional designer, I am able to create scenarios to encourage purposeful learning.

Project team

I completed this project expecting to have key stakeholders including HR managers, a product owner, and relevant SMEs.

Task Overview

This scenario-based project is for new hires to be actively engaged in company policies. The course takes the learner through scenarios where they need to make decisions. Feedback is provided for the choices they make to allow them to understand company policies.

Design Theory

Branching scenario for this project

This eLearning was developed through Cathy Moore’s branching scenario. It was essential to make the characters in the scenario relatable and someone they work with or their role. Allowing them to visualize digitally observing their colleagues in a scene or finding themselves in a situation provokes them to think, “What would I do if this happened in real life?”.

Their responses lead them into company policies that will create room for discussions. This also leverages on “constructivism” theory where learners make meaning of their learning through experiential learning.

Design and Development Process

  • I would have shared an action map with the respective stakeholders to achieve the goals in a stipulated timeline
  • Next, I would have initiated a kick off meeting with SMEs to understand the content required for this course.
  • I would have developed a storyboard, including a prototype
  • Once I had conducted research with current hires, I would have analyzed the needs and gaps that need to be filled.
  • I would have created a storyboard in Microsoft Word using a template by Brett Kirkpatrick to help write out the scenario and plan the work I would do in Adobe Captivate.
